On the August 8, 2008 weekend, the Victoria Chinese Commerce Association will host and present events to celebrate 150 years of achievement of Chinese Canadians in Canada. Victoria, British Columbia, (which the Chinese call 'Dai Fau' or Big Port) is where the early Chinese created the first Chinatown. Historically, Chinatowns were the focal points of the early Chinese communities, each being a "haven" and a base from which new immigrants could begin their new lives.
Victoria's Chinatown is the oldest Chinatown in Canada and physically the oldest surviving Chinatown in North America. It was the "cradle" of our forbearers and "roots" of present and future generations. People, particularly Chinese from all over, will be invited to come to our "Roots". As you know, Victoria's Chinatown has been designated as a national historic site by our federal government.
The significance of the chosen date will not escape those who understand Chinese culture. It will be 08/08/08 (an auspicious "triple 8"). The August 8, 2008 weekend celebrations will begin with a Gala Celebration Dinner to honour those historical and individual achievements of Chinese in Canada. A Celebration Pageant, or Show, depicting the historical milestones of the Chinese in Canada as a showcase of their historical triumphs in Canadian history will follow. The Pageant will be an original work to be commissioned by the Victoria Chinese Commerce Association.
Our celebrations are inclusive. We invite all other communities and cultures to join and celebrate with us during that weekend and other events leading up to it. "Partnerships in Celebration" continue to be sought to bring the communities together and engage in our celebration events.
The events will celebrate Chinese achievements in:
- all areas of culture (Art, Music, Drama, Dance etc.) ,
- business and innovation (business, professions, internet, etc),
- public service, and generally past present and future achievements.
Please join us in celebrating in 2008. Sponsors are needed to ensure the success of the celebrations.
